Another thing that helps start the ts420 is the throttle lock thumb switch on the front of the handle. With this, you can lock the gas flow on for cold starting, but you should not operate the saw with this locked. Of course there's a choke lever for starting a cold ts 420 also.

The throttle trigger interlock is on the top of the saw's handle. The palm of the trigger hand covers and depresses it to keep the saw running. Once you let go, the saw will stop. This is a safety device to prevent trigger action when not firmly gripped. The trigger cannot be depressed to rev the engine unless this throttle trigger interlock is depressed. For starting, you squeeze the throttle interlock and throttle at the same time, and then lock the thumb switch in the ON position. Then the throttle will remain in a partially pressed position even when you let go.

When starting a Stihl ts 420 cold, close the choke. If the saw is still warm after a previous run, you can use the choke half way. Press the compression release button, and once the engine has fired, it'll close itself. Press the purge button a few times until you see it fills with fuel. Now that the fuel lines and carb have fresh and cool fuel, it should start easier. The first time the machine attempts to start, push in the compression release button again and move the choke to the open position so that you don't flood the machine on your next pull with choke in full closed position.
